A sweet little kokeshi doll featuring a scene of a deer with a fawn.
She stands just over 180mm with her bow. Her head of hair has a diameter of 60mm and her base has a diameter of 38mm.
Kokeshi are wooden treasures that first appeared in the mid Edo period (1603-1867) and are commonly believed to be originally crafted as toys by wood craftsmen from Northern Japan who were unable to work for months at a time during the heavy snow.
Our Kokeshi are sourced from Japan by a mother and daughter team who have been travelling there for many years. Most are vintage (from 1950's to 1970's) Following WWII, products made of plastic were too expensive and overseas travel was too unattainable. Japanese frequently made trips all over Japan to hot springs where kokeshi were sold as souvenirs to tourists. It became customary to pick up a new doll on each visit.
Sadly the vintage wooden kokeshi are rapidly disappearing in modern Japan making them more precious.
This one is hand stamped on the base.
